As its title implies, "Unwind" is a soothing collection of original piano solos
by pianist/composer Louis Landon. A jazz pianist with an impressive list of
performing credentials, both as a soloist and as part of various bands and
combos, Landon has an easy, melodic style that is warmly optimistic and
accessible, yet complex enough to keep it interesting with repeated listens. I
hear a lot of relaxing piano music, but "Unwind" stands out as an exceptional CD
with its quiet sophistication and gentle elegance.
"My Brooke" opens the CD with a sweetly melodic love song. Lyrical and a little
bit wistful, this is a lovely beginning. "I Can See" is just a shade darker and
somewhat more introspective - perhaps a kind of musical soliloquy. Very nice!
"Feel" has a warm, easy grace about it that is almost conversational.
'Mindfulness" is more abstract and ambient with lots of open space between the
chords - interesting and evocative. "Peaceful" is the perfect title for this
gorgeous piece - a gentle musical massage for the mind. "Freefalling" has a
floating, dreamy quality that meanders at its own pace. "Alone" is one of my
favorites. A little more melancholy than the other pieces, its intimacy and
emotional honesty are deeply felt. "Music For Michael" returns to a somewhat
more ambient, improvisational style that drifts along at its own unhurried pace.
"Childhood's End" closes the set with an emotional free-form piece that is
reflective and touching.
"Unwind" is Louis Landon's sixth CD to date, but is the first one I've heard.
It's a treat for the ears and mind, and the perfect way to de-stress and relax.
